This guide is not here to attack any brand. The goal is simple: put the published specs and warranty language in one place, point out what each brand does not publish, and help you ask better questions before an in-home sales visit.

What this guide covers

A note on sources: every Puronics fact below comes from the official Puronics Hydronex iGen C and Pur-Alkaline RO brochures published by Puronics Water Systems, Inc. Every other brand's facts come from that brand's own website or spec sheets. Where a brand does not publish a number, we say so instead of guessing.

Questions to Ask Before You Sign

  1. Rent vs. buy: If rent, finance, and purchase are all available, ask for the total cost over 5 and 10 years. Include salt, filters, service plans, delivery, cancellation, and buyout terms.
  2. What exactly is "lifetime"? Ask whether lifetime applies to the tank only, resin, valve body, electronics, labor, or the entire installed system.
  3. Dealer-service conditions: Ask whether the warranty requires annual service, dealer-only filters, dealer-only salt, or dealer-only maintenance. If yes, get the written requirement before signing.
  4. Labor and service calls: Manufacturer warranties often cover parts but not labor. Kinetico and Hague say this directly. Ask the dealer what labor they cover, for how long, and whether trip charges apply.
  5. Registration deadlines: Hague requires registration within 30 days. For any brand, ask whether the warranty must be registered and by when.
  6. Exact model quoted: Ask for the model number, resin volume, capacity, programmed salt dose, gpm, NSF/WQA listing, and written warranty for the exact unit being quoted.
  7. RO filters and replacements: Ask whether aftermarket filters void coverage, how often filters are replaced, and the annual cost.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which of these brands publish grain capacity and flow rate for the softener we reviewed?

Culligan, EcoWater and Hague publish size-level numbers such as gr/lb efficiency and gpm. The Puronics Hydronex iGen C brochure does not list grain capacity, salt efficiency or gpm, the Kinetico Premier XP page we reviewed does not list grain capacity, gr/lb or gpm, and Leaf Home lists flow rate (up to 15 gpm) but not grain capacity.

Does a "lifetime" warranty cover the whole system?

It depends on the brand. Culligan lists the conditioner tank and Cullex resin as lifetime but the entire conditioner at one year. EcoWater's lifetime coverage is for the salt tank and mineral tank for the original owner. Puronics' brochure says "Limited Lifetime Warranty on the entire water system. Covers manufacturing defects and workmanship." but does not publish labor coverage or service conditions. Ask for the written warranty for the exact model.

Are labor and service calls covered?

Kinetico states its limited warranty does not include freight or labor charges, and Hague's WaterMax warranty does not cover service-call or labor costs. The other sources we reviewed do not publish labor coverage, so ask the dealer what labor they cover, for how long, and whether trip charges apply.

Do I need to register my softener warranty?

Hague requires the registration card to be returned within 30 days. For any brand, ask whether the warranty must be registered and by when.

What should I do before choosing a brand?

Test your home's water first, then compare systems against your actual hardness, iron, chlorine/chloramine, odor, and drinking-water concerns.

Test First, Then Decide

The best first step is not choosing a brand from a brochure. It is testing your home's water first, then comparing the right system for your actual hardness, iron, chlorine/chloramine, odor, and drinking-water concerns.

Community Water Test can start with a free water test. We call first, explain what the test is for, and only recommend an in-home visit if it makes sense. No pressure, no blind pitch.
